Becoming A Doctor – Not An Easy Option!

There’s no easy way to become a doctor, it takes years of committed study, devoted time and hard work, but is one of the most rewarding careers out there. If you want to help people, which is essentially what the study of medicine is all about, then being a doctor could be the right choice for you.

There are over 60 specialisms in medicine, ranging from surgeons, to psychiatrists, to a local community GP. Each requires unique skills as well as a set of standard required characteristics that are essential to all medical careers. As a doctor, your role will involve diagnosing and treating patients, monitoring their progress, providing the best advice and reassurance and ultimately changing people’s lives for the better.

Your medical knowledge will need to be constantly updated to keep up with the latest advancements and rapidly changing technology so that you can offer the most suitable treatment available. It’s also important to have a strong understanding of people as individuals as the best options vary between each patient and each has their own needs, feelings, thoughts and fears.

Other attributes you will need include having a rational and logical approach; to help you understand methods and why they may or may not work. Having an open mind and a sense of humility will help you to see other people’s points of view and to look to others when you need to. You need to be confident in your decisions and judgements, and be able to cope well under pressure as sometimes it really can be a matter of life or death.
